From international star power to an established designer outlet – the story of Hede Fashion Outlet
When Hede Fashion Outlet — then known as Freeport — opened its doors on 16 November 2001, the centre was launched with major international attention. Supermodel Claudia Schiffer cut the ribbon in front of hundreds of visitors and extensive media coverage, creating an opening day that has become part of Kungsbacka’s local history. Freeport was introduced as Sweden’s first major designer outlet village, opening with around 60 stores. Among them were well‑known brands such as Levi’s, Adidas and Filippa K, all present from day one — and still part of the outlet today.
A unique concept with an international feel
The opening generated great optimism in Kungsbacka. Both the municipality and the local retail community saw the potential of a new shopping village that could strengthen the city’s position as a retail destination, while significantly increasing visitor numbers. The architecture also drew attention right from the start, featuring the distinctive glass pyramids at the entrance and a partially covered pedestrian street — a design approach that was entirely new for Swedish outlet environments.
Growth and transformation
In the years that followed, the centre grew with new brands, new ownership and a refreshed identity. The transformation from Freeport to Hede Fashion Outlet marked a shift towards a more modern and locally rooted concept — while maintaining its strong mix of international brands. Today, 25 years later, the outlet remains a key destination for great shopping and strong labels — and several of the pioneers from 2001 are still part of the journey.
